Thursday, May 16th, Coachella Valley Unified School District celebrated the start of construction at Palm View Elementary School with a groundbreaking ceremony. Over 100 members of the educational community gathered in celebration as they watched student performances and listened to the mayor and district staff speak about the exciting changes to come.
"Downtown is being transformed," Steven Hernandez, Mayor of Coachella stated. "Kids are going to have state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none. And they deserve it!"
Located in the downtown area of Coachella, this 90-year-old campus is a pillar in the community and has a rich heritage worthy of preservation. Several brass plaques adorn the halls and remember the campus as "Coachella Grammar School" in 1939.
“This project is not about distancing ourselves from the past, but rather embracing the past and bringing hope for the future to empower and enlighten our students.”
To honor this heritage, the District displayed photo albums, images, and artifacts from throughout the school's history to remind people of the thousands of children that have been educated on these grounds.
“We thank this school for the 90 years of learning and memories and welcome the new.”
The modernizations double the square footage of the school totaling over 83,000 SF and accommodating 800 students. The new, 2-story classroom building will contain 38 total classrooms and include a media center/technology hub with 2 specialty labs. Modernizations also include a new administrative building with a partner center; and a new MPR with food service and a lunch shelter. Students will also benefit from the new playfields, hardcourts and fitness course integrated throughout the campus.

The district gives many thanks to the community that helped make this happen for the students of Palm View Elementary and anticipates the project to be completed by May 2021.
